Lotería Remedios: A Conversation with Xelena Gonzáles

Join us for a special ¡Viva! Los Libros event presented with our compañeras at Rise & Thrive Latinas!

This intimate event features a fireside plática with author/creator of Lotería Remedios Oracle Deck, Xelena Gonzáles. This conversation, moderated by Steph Gómez, founder of Rise and Thrive Latinas, will bring us into the inspiration behind the project. Guests will have an opportunity to  learn about how they can use the deck to connect to our ancestral knowledge for divination, reflection, and self-healing.

ABOUT the Author

Xelena González practices the healing arts through writing and movement. She is a storyteller, dancer, and visiting author who centers self-love in her multi-disciplinary workshops for all ages. Her picture books include the award-winning titles ALL AROUND US (Cinco Puntos Press, 2017), WHERE WONDER GROWS (Lee & Low, 2022), and REMEMBERING (Simon & Schuster, 2023). Her writing for adults includes poetry, essays, fiction, and screenwriting. LOTERIA REMEDIOS is her collection of reflections, divinations, plant and animal medicine, and other tools for self-healing based on the time-honored game (Hay House, July 2024). A former librarian and enrolled member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, Xelena has become a sought-after speaker on topics such as radical self love, creative early literacy strategies, inhabiting story through music and movement, and reclaiming indigenous identity in Latinx communities. To learn more visit https://www.xelena.space/

ABOUT Loteria Remedios Oracle Deck

A beautifully-illustrated 54-card oracle deck that reimagines the iconic game of Lotería by using the traditional symbols for divination, reflection, and healing.

La Rosa. La Muerte. El Nopal. These are just a few of the 54 iconic symbols that appear in the beloved card game Lotería, also known as Mexican Bingo. Since reaching modern-day Mexico in 1779, the deck has seen many artful incarnations, and across Latinx cultures, it has served the multilayered purpose of practicing the Spanish language, bringing loved ones together, and of course, trying our luck.

Lotería Remedios enters the cards into the canon of cartomancy: it uses the traditional symbols for divination, reflection, and self-healing. Here author Xelena González, a member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, is continuing the work of her great-grandmother, a curandera sought-after and highly respected for her abilities.
